Author Showcase (Delia Owens)

While trying to figure out what to do with pages for this blog. I thought that doing a page per author would be an interesting idea. That way, anyone looking for a specific review could just go to the author page and see a list of the author's books (also great for finding your next TBR). However, some authors are "one hit wonders", and making a page for them doesn't really seem necessary. For those authors, I will post them on a combined page. This one!

Delia Owens

Delia Owens is one of those authors who had a massive breakout hit and then, at least so far, not much else. You will probably recognise her name, and if you don't, you will definitely recognise the title of her novel, Where the Crawdads Sing. Her debut novel became especially popular as one of Reese Witherspoon's "Reese's Book Club" picks. It was then adapted into a major film produced by Reese Witherspoon herself and Lauren Neustadter.

Delia Owens was born and raised in Georgia. Her life in the South sparked her love for nature and the wilderness. She later attended the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology befo completing her PhD in animal behaviour from the University of California, Davis.

In 1974, she and her then-husband moved to Zambia to study animals in the Kalahari Desert. Her experiences in Africa contributed to her memoirs, Cry of the Kalahari (Kindle Edition, Hardcover, Paperback), The Eye of the Elephant (Kindle Edition, Hardcover, Paperback), and Secrets of the Savanna (Kindle Edition, Audiobook)along with many other academic publications

During their time in Africa (specifically Botswana and Zambia), both Delia and her husband Mark Owens were, at one point, wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of an alleged poacher. Some readers believe that Where the Crawdads Sing may subtly draw on this unusual chapter in her life.

In the almost ten years since Where the Crawdads Sing's debut, Delia Owens has not published any other works. You can find my review here
